From Hobby to High Fashion
Taiana Giefer, Santa Barbara native and Founder of Taiana Design, had a piece of her destiny handed to her unexpectedly the day she was introduced to the art of wool felting while summering in Germany.
Hers is a unique success story of how one multi-talented artisan made her entrance into the high fashion world, all within about a month’s time, under a set of unlikely and high-stakes circumstances.
The stars aligned a few years after the auspicious felting lessons, while Taiana was living in New York growing a modeling career and was given a chance opportunity to present her hand-felted scarves and accessories to designer Francisco Costa (Calvin Klein’s principal designer at the time). It was love at first sight, and Costa immediately asked her to make a collection of fabrics for that year’s New York Fashion week—which was taking place in exactly one week’s time. Without a moment’s hesitation, Taiana said yes to this absurd request.
In a beautiful and maddening unfolding of events, she found herself working around the clock that week, modeling and attending castings by day and felting in her converted Brooklyn warehouse space by night, to produce a body of work that would premier on the runways of New York Fashion Week.
Her fabrics, once delivered to Francisco Costa, were made into dresses and jackets for the Calvin Klein runway show that year. Subsequently there was a flurry of press and excitement amongst the high fashion community and suddenly Taiana Giefer was the new hot designer on the New York fashion scene. Thus, Taiana Design was born. She was getting the kind of opportunities in one month’s time that most designers work for their entire lives.
The rest is history…in the making.
Today, about eight years after the birth of Taiana Design, business is thriving and Taiana continues to get orders from all over the world. Her work has been sold at Maxfields in LA and in a number of the top boutiques throughout the world. True to creative Millennial form, she also photographs her own product for her website and Instagram, and often models the pieces herself as well.
What’s next for Taiana Design?
Taiana Design continues to create custom one-of-a-kind wraps and scarves, but much of her energy these days is being devoted to large-scale tapestries, which her patrons, supporters and friends are eagerly anticipating.
