New Zealand Bottled at the Source
Justin and Mindy Mahy are making a splash in Santa Barbara! Their story is one of travel, romance, and sparkle that has culminated into the launch of their business, KOPU sparkling water.
The couple met on a rooftop in New York City for a Kentucky Derby Party that ultimately led to marriage and a honeymoon overlooking the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. It comes as no surprise that the inception of the business started there with a simple question: How can we bottle the beauty of this bay?
KOPU chose Santa Barbara to launch the company and the Impact Hub seemed like the most logical place to do so. They loved the workspace feel and community, but most of all, the work/life balance they were able to achieve and maintain as they started their family.
KOPU, which means Venus, the Morning Star, is a perfect fit to call Santa Barbara home. The region’s rich environmental history and start-up atmosphere played a part in the decision for the signature aquamarine bottle strategically chosen. Unlike glass and plastic bottled sparkling water, KOPU remains environmentally focused with an aluminum bottle. “75 percent of all aluminum ever made is still in use today through reuse and recycling.” Justin says. “The bottle features a special mouth designed to enhance the experience of thirst quenching KOPU sparkling water.
Inside the stylish bottle, the water feels soft and has tiny, tiny bubbles, when compared to other sparkling options. It’s a luxurious drinking experience, that originates from the Bay of Plenty source in New Zealand. The aquifer is thousands of feet below a dormant volcano that gives the water its taste. The minerals include naturally occurring silica, commonly referred to as the ‘beauty mineral’, and found to enhance hair, nails and skin, to create a sweet water that tastes as good as it makes the consumer look”.
KOPU launched their product on top of the Canary hotel on August 11th and continue to thrive out of the Impact Hub. Justin said starting the enterprise took a great deal of effort, but “It’s all about tenacity and the striving to succeed. You’ve got to take the time to create an amazing product, and then the work starts.”
KOPU can be found at many Santa Barbara and other Southern California high-end venues and markets.
